Chat Summary Page

Description:

The Chat Summary page is an entry point to the Chat Room for each lesson in the course.

The Chat Summary page also displays a table of Chat activity (including number of Total Posts, Participants, Active Users, and dates of first and last Post).

Click the Refresh link at the top-right side of the page to be sure that the Chat Summary information is up to date. (The information is updated when you click Refresh or come to the Chat Summary page from another page.)

The Chat Summary page is only accessible through the Chat selection in the Collaboration menu in the top navigation bar. Some Instructors may choose to remove Learner access to the Chat Summary page, in order to require Learners to access Chat through the Course Outline. (For more information, see Note for Learner access to Chat at the end of this topic.)

Access and Navigation:

1.     Click Collaboration in the top navigation bar, then click Chat.

2.     Pick a course.

To search for a course, enter text in the Search field, then click the green arrow button or hit Enter on your keyboard. The program searches both the Course Code and the Course Title.

To list all courses, click the Find All button. Course titles appear in the Course pull-down menu. Click a course title.

3.     The lessons of the course appear in the Lesson Name column. For the desired lesson, click the button labeled either Begin Chat or Go to Chat on the right side of the page.

Note: If no Chat messages have been posted for the lesson, the button is labeled Begin Chat. If another user has already posted a Chat message, the button is labeled Go to Chat.

4.     The Chat Room opens as a pop-up window.

Chat Summary information:

For each lesson or module in the course, the Chat Summary page displays the following information:

The number of Total Posts (the number of posted messages)

The number of Participants (the number of users who have posted messages)

The number Active Users (the number of users who are currently in the Chat Room)

The date and time of the first post and last post for a given lesson or module

The information is updated when you come to the Chat Summary page from another page, or click the Refresh link at the top-right side of the page.

Note for Learner access to Chat:

An Instructor who wishes to control when Chat is open for a given lesson may remove Learner access to the Chat Summary page, since Learners can post the first Chat message for any lesson in the course from this page.

If the Collaboration menu does not appear, or the Chat selection within the Collaboration menu does not appear, then your access to the Lesson Summary page has been removed.

If access to the Chat Summary page by Learners is removed,  Learners would instead have to access Chat through the Course Outline. In the Course Outline, a link to Chat for a given lesson appears only after another user has posted a message. In this case, the Instructor would post the first message. Learners would then see a link to Chat for the lesson and the Chat Room is opened.
